Depending on the rules of the game, players are sometimes allowed to bluff other players. Bluffing is a key feature of poker and distinguishes the game from other vying games. One example is a bluff in which the bettor makes a bet and then folds his hand. This is often done to give the opponent a chance to make a higher bet.

In some variants, a third card is added to the deck, which may be called the wild card. The wild card is the highest card in the hand. For instance, in stud poker, the highest possible hand is a pair of jacks, but the lowest is 7-5-4-3-2 in two or more suits. Another example is a straight flush.

In modern poker, the main goal of the player is to make the best hand. The best hand in a particular game is determined by the rules and will vary from one game to the next. Some games award the pot to the best hand, while other games will split the pot between the best hand and the lowest.

Poker can be played with any number of players, but typically, a minimum of six to eight is recommended. There are three primary types of poker: draw poker, five-card draw, and straight poker. All poker variants involve at least one round of betting. The number of rounds and the cards used will vary by region and type of poker.

Typical poker games are based on a standard deck of 52 cards. However, there are variations of the game that are played with shorter packs or no cards at all.
